Like my clients, I crave a little (okay, a lot!) of luxury on vacation.
But not all my own vacations have been luxurious.

In fact, my honeymoon was a disaster. 

My husband actually led the planning (this was well before I started planning travel professionally!), and he booked us into timeshares far from the major sights. Technically, we had an ocean view … but there was no beach! We traveled halfway around the world and didn’t even have sand to sink our toes into. 

Our room was dark and damp, and the hotel pool was tiny—nothing like the glamorous infinity pool I was imagining.

The worst part, though, is that my husband and I were just not on the same page, since we had never traveled together before. He booked us on tons of tours and excursions each day. We were constantly on the go … which was a no-go for me, since I’m a lay-back-and-lounge kind of girl.

All in all, my honeymoon was exhausting. And that’s never a word you want to use to describe a just-for-two getaway.

Bless my husband—he tried his best!—but my less-than-luxurious honeymoon taught me a few things about what makes a trip romantic.

Namely, it taught me that when you only get 1 or 2 romantic escapes a year with your partner, you have to make them count.
