River cruising is one of the areas of travel I stay closely connected to throughout the year. Every couple of years, I attend the ASTA River Cruise Expo—an industry event where many of the world’s leading river cruise ships gather in one place.
It’s an incredible opportunity to step aboard multiple ships, meet the people behind the brands, and experience firsthand what makes each river cruise line unique.
Over the years I’ve attended the expo in both Amsterdam and Vienna (which happens to be one of my absolute favorite European cities), and each time I come away with new insights that help me better guide my clients.
At events like this, dozens of river ships gather in one place, allowing travel advisors to tour several ships in a very short time. I’m able to compare staterooms, dining experiences, ship design, and service styles across multiple cruise lines.

Even more importantly, I get to build relationships with the executives and teams behind these brands so I can better understand what makes each one unique—and which one might be the perfect fit for my clients.

Why River Cruising Is One of the Best Ways to Explore Europe
If you’ve ever dreamed of a journey where every day brings a new destination but you only unpack once, river cruising might be the perfect fit.
One of the reasons I’m so passionate about river cruising is that it simplifies travel while bringing you right into the heart of the experience. Instead of navigating trains, dragging luggage across cobblestones, or figuring out transportation between cities, you settle into your stateroom and let the journey unfold around you.
Your floating boutique hotel travels with you.
Each morning you wake up somewhere new—often right in the center of a historic city or charming village.
River cruise ships are also smaller and more intimate than large ocean ships, which creates a relaxed and personal atmosphere. Guests quickly recognize familiar faces, and the crew gets to know you throughout the journey.
I experienced this firsthand on one of my river cruises when I brought a friend along who absolutely loves tea. She discovered the library lounge on board and made it her favorite place to relax.
The staff would bring her a pot of tea, and what amazed her was that it never seemed to run out. Before the teapot was empty—or the tea had time to cool—another fresh pot would quietly appear.
She kept laughing and saying, “I can’t believe they take such good care of me.”
It was such a simple moment, but it captured exactly what river cruising feels like: relaxed, attentive, and quietly luxurious.
Some of the reasons travelers fall in love with river cruising include:
Immersive destinations
River cruise ships dock in the heart of cities and villages, so exploring often begins just steps from the ship.
Boutique-style ships
Unlike large ocean liners, river cruise ships feel more like floating boutique hotels with exceptional personal service.
Culinary and cultural experiences
Meals often highlight regional dishes and wines, and excursions are designed to immerse you in the culture and history of each destination.

Inside the ASTA River Cruise Expo: Comparing the Best River Cruise Lines
Over the years I’ve personally experienced several river cruise lines, including AmaWaterways, Viking River Cruises, and Amadeus River Cruises. I’ve also spent time aboard Uniworld ships, which truly feel like floating five-star boutique hotels.
One of my favorite itineraries was sailing the Danube from Vienna to Budapest. Vienna remains one of my favorite cities in Europe—the palaces, the music, the art, and the elegance of the city are unforgettable.
During that trip I attended an opera performance with ballet dancers, and it felt like stepping into another era.
Along the Danube you also visit incredible historic destinations like Melk Abbey, perched high above the river, and the charming town of Dürnstein in the Wachau Valley.
Many of these destinations are UNESCO World Heritage sites, and visiting them feels almost like stepping back in time and experiencing centuries of European history firsthand.
Most of the presentations and ship tours also highlight the incredible destinations travelers can experience along Europe’s rivers:

During the River Cruise Expo, I was also able to tour ships from several other leading river cruise brands, including:
- Scenic River Cruises
- Avalon Waterways
- Tauck River Cruises
- Emerald Cruises
- Riverside Luxury Cruises
Being able to step aboard these ships, explore the staterooms, experience the dining spaces, and learn about their excursions allows me to better guide my clients when choosing the right river cruise.
Each cruise line offers a slightly different experience—from ultra-luxury journeys to more active or wellness-focused itineraries.
What Makes River Cruising Different from Ocean Cruising
One of the questions I’m often asked is how river cruising compares to ocean cruising.
The simplest way I explain it is this: the magic just happens in different places.
On an ocean cruise, the magic often happens on the ship itself—with Broadway-style shows, expansive dining venues, and a wide variety of entertainment and activities.
On a river cruise, the magic usually happens off the ship.
Because river ships dock in the center of historic towns and cities, you can step off the ship and immediately find yourself surrounded by culture, architecture, and centuries of history.
Instead of traveling long distances between destinations, the destination is often right outside your door.
It’s a very immersive way to experience Europe.

How My River Cruise Experience Helps You Plan the Perfect Trip
As your travel advisor, my role goes beyond simply booking a vacation.
I spend time experiencing ships, meeting with cruise line teams, and staying informed about new itineraries so I can match each client with the right river cruise experience.
Events like the ASTA River Cruise Expo allow me to deepen those relationships and stay up to date with the latest developments in river cruising.
Through my industry partnerships—including my affiliation with Virtuoso—I’m also able to provide clients with additional amenities and benefits that enhance their travel experience.
If you’ve been thinking about taking a river cruise—or if you’re curious about whether it might be the right travel style for you—I’d love to help you explore the possibilities.
Sometimes the most memorable journeys begin when you unpack once, relax, and let the river guide you through the heart of a destination.
